Ammolite – from a rare mineralised fossil is born a unique gemstone.

Each piece, hand-cut and finished, is one-of-a-kind. The history of Ammolite begins more than 70 million years ago during the cretaceous period when dinosaurs were on the earth. During this time the interior of North America was partially submerged under the warm shallow Bearpaw Sea. During the fossilization process the sediment not only preserved the shell but also enhanced the shell's colors into iridescent greens, reds, yellows, and rare blues and violets.

In 1981 the International Colored Gemstone Commission (ICGC) recognised this new organic gemstone as Ammolite. With a finite supply in very specific areas, and only a select few of the preserved shells yielding gemstone material. Ammolite is the rarest gemstone in the world!

The grading of Ammolite for quality includes colour, colour combinations, intensity and flaws.

Ammolite Fossil Mining in the Rocky Mountains.

Mining for Ammolite

Gem quality deposits of Ammolite are found only in the Bearpaw geological Shale formations of Southern Alberta, Canada, which was an ancient sea covering, east of the Rocky Mountains. Gem bearing deposits are found 3 - 20m under the surface, strip mining methods are used to remove the covering of the formation where the ammonite's are found.
